Messaging

JOGL Network has built-in direct messaging so you can reach other members without leaving the platform.

Conversations

Open Messages (the speech-bubble button at the top right) to see your conversations. Each conversation is a real-time thread with one other member, or with a group (see below). Unread conversations show a badge, and the header button carries your total unread count. The list has a search box and the tabs All, Unread and Jojo (JOGL's notices, see below). On a wide screen the list stays beside the open conversation.

To start a conversation from someone's profile or search result, click Contact, then Message followed by their first name. On the Messages page, the New message button opens a menu with New message (one person), New group and Introduce two people.

Groups and introductions

A conversation can hold up to 50 people, you included.

• Start a group — choose New group, or pick several people in New message, then give the group a name if you like.
• Introduce two people — choose Introduce two people in the New message menu, use Introduce in someone's contact window, or pick Introduce name to… in the ⋯ menu of their profile or of your conversation with them. Pick the two people, write why they should meet (or click Draft it for me to have JOGL Network draft it from their profiles), and click Send introduction. This starts a group with the three of you; untick Stay in the group after the introduction to leave it once it is sent.
• In a group, each message from someone else shows their name, and the group's own lines (who started it, who added or removed whom, a new name) appear in the middle of the thread. Your message shows one grey tick until everyone who was in the group when you sent it has seen it, then two blue ticks; Info in the message's menu lists who has seen it and who hasn't yet.
• Group details (in the group's ⋯ menu) lets anyone in the group rename it, Add people and see the files sent in it. Mute stops notifications from that group for you while messages keep arriving. Only the person who started the group can Remove from group; anyone can Leave group. People added later see only the messages sent after they joined.

You can add someone to a group only if you could message them yourself, and two people who block each other can't be in the same group. While a block stands between you and someone in a group, you can't write or react in it, but you can leave it.

What you can do in a message

• React with emoji — hover a message and click the smiley, or right-click it (on a phone, press and hold). Reactions show a count and highlight the ones you added. The same menu lets you reply to a message, copy it or delete one of yours.
• Reply to a message — hover it and click Reply, pick Reply in its menu, or on a touch screen swipe it to the right. Your reply shows a faded copy of the original above it; tap the copy to jump to the original.
• See read receipts — a clock means your message is still sending, a single check means it was sent, and a double check means it was read, with the time on hover. Groups work a little differently (see above).
• Send images and attachments — images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP), PDF, text and Word files, up to 10 MB each. Pick them with the paperclip, or drag them anywhere onto the conversation. A HEIC photo, the format iPhones save photos in by default, is converted to JPEG in your browser when you drop it, so everyone can open it.
• See typing and online indicators when the other person is writing or present.

A shared project arrives as a card in your conversation with the person who shared it, with Accept / Decline buttons. Notices from JOGL come from Jojo: its row sits in your conversation list with a Notifications badge (the Jojo tab narrows the list to it), and opening it shows its notices. Each notice can carry one button to the page it is about (such as See profile, See the event or Open the community), and a community invitation arrives there as a card with Accept / Decline. You can't reply to Jojo; the link at the bottom of its list opens your notification settings.

If the other person deletes their account, the conversation stays readable, shown as from a Deleted member, but you can no longer reply.

To block or report the other member, open the More actions menu (the ⋯ button) at the top of the conversation. A block works both ways: the conversation stays readable to both of you, but neither of you can send a new message, reaction or file in it, or find the other in New message. While you have blocked them, a note saying You blocked this member takes the place of the message box; a message they send is refused with This member isn't accepting messages from you, and nothing tells them they were blocked. AI help

• Suggest replies — when the last message is from the other person and your message box is empty, click the sparkle beside the send button and pick one of the suggested replies to edit and send.
• Generate personalized intro — in a one-to-one conversation with no messages yet, the Not sure how to start? card offers it: choose a style, a purpose and an angle, and JOGL Network drafts an introduction from both profiles for you to edit. The same helper appears as Write it for me when you send a connection request.
• Suggest icebreakers — the same card drafts a few opening lines; click one to put it in the message box.
• Draft it for me — in the introduction sheet, drafts why the two people should meet (see above).

Who can message you

Choose in Settings → Privacy ("Who can message you"): Anyone, Members of my communities + My connections (the default), My connections only, or No one. The same page holds who can send you connection requests and the people you've blocked.

Someone your setting excludes won't see a Message button for you, find you in New message or add you to a group; if they open your contact details, they are told you aren't taking messages from them. When you would accept a connection request from them, it suggests sending you one first. It says so whichever setting refused them, No one included, so it never reveals which one you chose. A thread that already exists between you stays open, so change the setting before a first message if you want to close the door entirely, or block the member to close a thread already open. A member whose profile is archived has no Message button and can't be picked in New message, so nobody can start a new conversation with them there. A connection who shares a project with them still opens one with the invitation, and Jojo's notices still reach them. An account that isn't verified yet can only reach people in its own communities and its connections, and is told so when it tries to reach anyone else (see My Network).

New-message notifications arrive by push and email according to your notification settings; a group you muted sends you none.
